Whim Quarterly Has LAUNCHED

Whim Quarterly had its launch last night at the Three of Cups Lounge on the Lower East Side, with a night of great stand-ups, free(ish) magazine copies, and discount drinks.

To go along with its official launch, the Whim Quarterly website is now up and running with more than just magazine ordering information (although that's still the most important part - ordering a copy is the only way you'll get to read the two pieces written by me, along with all the other fantastic content*). Why don't you go check out the website. We'll wait right here.

*Why not give some for Christmas? Or Hanukkah? Or The Feast of Cthulu?

9 AM Meeting Wins at the Channys

My webseries 9 AM Meeting won two of the four categories in which it was nominated, at Thursday's NYC Channy Awards. I picked up a statue for Best Animation or Special Effects and my collaborator Matt Koff and I got the award for Best Writing. It was a fantastic show, and many thanks to everyone who organized and put it together.

The Writer's Guild of America East put out a press release about our win here.

And you can read a summary of the show and get a list of all the winners on The Apiary.

Here are some photos of the event:

Lastly, there were several original videos shot specifically for the awards show, and I appeared in a couple. Check out the Craft Services video, written by Matt, and the Alibis video featuring all the nominees. ALL of the original Channy videos can be found here

The Flop House Episode Fifty-One is ONLINE!

To borrow a line from Patton Oswalt: You like Wolverine? Well, in my movie you get to see Wolverine as a little kid! Meanwhile, Stuart suggests an alternate Wolverine history of the United States, Elliott suggests some novel super-villains, Dan makes Elliott do a spit take, and contest winner Dash has the decency to be a really nice guy and not a serial killer we were foolish enough to let into the apartment.

0:00 - 0:32 - Introductions and Theme
0:33 - 1:37 - We introduce our special guest, Flop House contest winner Dash.
1:38 - 43:35 - As four comic book nerds, we find far too much to say about X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
43:46 - 45:55 - Final Judgments
45:56 - 51:55 - The sad bastards recommend.
51:56 - 54:19 - Goodbyes, theme, and outtakes.

The Flop House Episode FIFTY is ONLINE!

When a podcast reaches a certain age--say 50--it may find itself susceptible to a midlife crisis. It might buy itself a shiny red convertible mixing board. It may dump one of its hosts for a hot young blonde. Or maybe it just regresses, with an animated kid's film like Delgo. Meanwhile, Elliott tries out some of his Jabberjaw molestation jokes, Dan reveals the surprising owners of the Delgo website, and Stuart is having none of it.

0:00 - 0:34 - Introduction and theme
0:35 - 3:40 - We devote a little time to patting ourselves on the back for reaching fifty episodes.
3:41 - 28:51 - We celebrate our fiftieth anniversary by discussing Delgo, the movie most likely to inspire blank stares in our audience, followed by the phrase "What the fuck's a Delgo?." Maybe we'll get our shit together for the 100th.
28:51 - 29:58 - Pause for station identification
29:59 - 35:55 - Final judgments
35:56 - 40:40 - Flop House Movie Mailbag, plus some discussion of a wacky cross-country adventure.
40:41 - 47:40 - The sad bastards recommend.

The Flop House Episode Forty-Nine is ONLINE

Does the failure of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li mean we'll never get that long-awaited Blanka biopic? We fail to answer these and other questions. Meanwhile, Stuart discusses how thugs benefit from Outlook and multi-tasking, Elliott explains how this movie would be right at home in classic Hollywood, and Dan reveals he knows far too much about lesbian vampires.

0:00 - 0:37 - Introduction and theme
0:38 - 39:10- We dive right in and discuss a movie based on Chun-Li - a video game character that was only popular because preteen boys are too scared to talk to real girls.
39:11 - 40:10 - Final judgments
40:11 - 41:33 - A CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED, for the contest everyone (even the hosts) forgot was happening.

The Flop House Episode Forty-Eight is ONLINE

Flop House's annual SHOCKTOBER celebration concludes with the most obscure movie we've ever tackled (and that includes Memory)--a ecologically-minded Saw knockoff called... The Chaos Experiment. Meanwhile Dan sets himself up for one-upmanship failure, Elliott explains why some topless scenes are created less equal than others, and Stuart struggles with technologically-induced laryngitis.

0:00 - 0:56 - Introduction, APOLOGY, and theme
0:57 - 4:00 - The return of Dan's least favorite reoccurring segment.
4:01 - 41:41- Dan, Stu, and Elliott make vicious fun of a movie you've never heard of, giving the lie to their claim that they're too nice to kick a film when it's down.
41:42 - 44:53- Final judgments
44:54 - 51:54 - Our second and final SHOCKTOBER sad bastards recommend of 2009.

Terry Jones

This weekend I got to attend a small Q&A / writing seminar with Monty Python member Terry Jones. Suffice it to say that, as is almost certainly the case for anyone who does comedy, Monty Python means more to me than I can express.

Afterward, some members of my sketch group Mr. Whitpants (Matt Koff and Roy Koshy), a friend-of-the-group (Mike Yoder), and I got a picture with the man himself:

Hmmn. That's nice, but it looks a little cluttered with all those people in there. Let's see if I can...

Well, that's better, but there still seems to be something... off about it. Maybe I can fix it if I just...

HEY, EVERYBODY! LOOK AT ME AND MY BEST FRIEND, MONTY PYTHON'S TERRY JONES!

The Flop House Episode Forty-Seven is ONLINE

Flop House's annual SHOCKTOBER celebration begins with the only horror movie we can think of featuring a dybbuk: The Unborn. Perhaps writer/director David Goyer should have learned the old vaudeville lesson--words with a K are funny (not scary). Meanwhile Stuart reveals his complete ignorance of celebrity scandals, Elliott shows how he passed the bar in Ape Law, and Dan admits we basically choose movies based on whether they have a panty shot in the poster.*

0:00 - 0:34 - Introduction and SPOOKY theme
0:35 - 2:27 - The usual off-topic nonsense up front.
2:28 - 30:44- Finally, the pro-abortion, anti-holocaust, Jewish demon story you've been waiting for! The Unborn.
30:45 - 34:04- Final judgments
34:05 - 39:29 - Movie Mailbag
39:30 - 47:11 - A special SHOCKTOBER sad bastards recommend (the first two links aren't horror movies, but the rest are).

The Flop House Live at the UCB Theater NY

Hey everyone who love the Flop House podcast and also lives in New York City and also doesn't mind going to a comedy show at midnight (we realize this is an ever-shrinking segment of our audience) -- the Flop House is gonna do a LIVE appearance* at the UCB theater in New York on Saturday, October 10.**

So come on out to Andy Rocco's Hipster Show, and see the Flop House in person. Is Stuart's penis as big as he claims? Does Elliott walk around with his Emmy around his neck, like we say on the show? Is Dan the devilishly handsome, snappily-dressed, raw sexual magnet that you're probably imagining? Is it true that Dan is the one who updates this website? There's only one way to find out.

The Flop House Episode Forty-Six is ONLINE!

How can an erotic thriller with horrible racial politics, starring Beyoncé Knowles, be what founding Flop House co-host Simon Fisher would call "a real snore factory?" Who knows, but somehow they managed it. Meanwhile, Stuart reveals a surprising fact about sex in public bathrooms, Elliott explains how Beyoncé is like a Looney Tunes character, and Dan decries the film's no-fault attitude to the sexual assault of Idris Elba.

0:00 - 0:33 - Introduction and theme
0:34 - 4:14- We engage in a hilarious bit about how everyone spent last weekend.
4:15 - 28:26- Race-baiting mixed with Fatal Attraction seems like a recipe for trashy film fun. And yet, count the times that Dan sighs wearily, while discussing Obsessed.
28:27 - 30:30- Final judgments
30:31 - 34:30 - Movie Mailbag
34:31 - 39:24 - Inspired by the final letter, we segue directly into a special older "bad movie" edition of sad bastards recommend.
39:25 - 43:37 - Which, in turn, devolves into a discussion of T&A comedies.

Congratulations to Sara Schaefer, Emmy Winner

I'd like to congratulate my friend and occasional collaborator Sara Schaefer on winning an Emmy for "Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media." I've known few people who combine talent with so much drive and hustle, and you deserve every golden, pointy inch of that statuette.

You've certainly come a long way from the days when we got blackout drunk on comically large goblets of red stuff.

I'm kidding, of course. I meant "falling down" drunk.

Congratulations again, on your Emmy win. If anyone reading this has never gone to see Sara perform, jump on your very next chance. Just watch out when she pulls out a straw and starts eying your drink.

9 AM Meeting at the New York Television Festival

Last month, the first episode of my show 9 AM Meeting (edited/illustrated by me, written & performed by me and Matt Koff) premiered at Channel 101 and was the TOP VOTE GETTER.

This month, Channel 101 is part of the New York Television Festival, which means a bigger, cushier screening venue; more attendees; media attention and probably other exciting things that I haven't bothered to figure out. We'll be having our WORLD PREMIERE of the second episode as part of this screening (this episode is totally different than the second episode currently available on YouTube--which both Matt and I both liked, but didn't think was the strongest representation of our work to showcase in the festival. So if you've seen that one, this one will STILL BE ALL NEW).

The screening is at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 23, at New World Stages (stage 2) -- 350 W. 50th St. b/w 8th and 9th Aves.

If you're unfamiliar with the Channel 101 concept, then this explaination, stolen wholesale from their website, should help:

"Every month, five-minute TV shows are screened for a live audience in New York City. The audience votes to renew some shows and cancel others. The top five shows become the new "prime time" lineup; losing shows are banished forever. The next month, prime time shows return with new episodes, pitted against each other and a crop of fresh new pilots."

So, clearly it's in our interest to encourage you to come out and vote for our show--but don't worry, they've smartly arranged it so that it's not just a numbers game. Each voter marks down their top FIVE shows, so people can shill for their friends, but merit still rules the day.

If you want to come, the show is FREE, but you'll probably want to reserve tickets online to ensure that you have a seat. There's a nominal $3.50 fee for reserving online, but that fee is per reservation, NOT per person, so if you get together with other people to reserve a block, you're still only paying $3.50 in total. One thing to note (if I'm reading my own reservation confirmation correctly, and I may not be), you need to pick up will call tickets by 6.

The Flop House Episode Forty-Five is ONLINE

Sometimes you eat the Skinwalker, and sometimes the Skinwalker eats you. For our first ever five man podcast, we bring in some experts -- specifically, the authors of the book The Werewolf's Guide to Life: A Manual for the Newly-Bitten (available for purchase Tuesday, September 15) Bob Powers and Ritch Duncan. Perhaps they'll be able to explain this Navajo werewolf opus. Meanwhile, Dan is uncharacteristically lewd, Elliott reveals his unexpected martial arts skills, and Stuart discloses his secret identity as a vigilante stripper.

0:00 - 0:31 - Introduction and theme
0:32 - 3:58- We introduce our guests, lycanthropy activists Ritch Duncan and Bob Powers.
3:59 - 35:58 - What are "Skinwalkers?" Are they ancient legendary beasts? Are they sufferers of a terrible curse? Are they nudists? Or, perhaps they're just a way to tart up a lousy werewolf movie in Native American garb.
35:59 - 41:51- Final judgments

48:22 - 50:09 - Goodbyes, theme and outtakes.

The Flop House: Episode #43 is ONLINE

Robert Deniro. Al Pacino. Co-starring together at last, as the result of an cruel prank, in which they are cast in a terrible, terrible (terrible) movie. We talk about Righteous Kill. Meanwhile Dan lets us in on why he sees everything as the set-up for an erotic cat-and-mouse game, Elliott talks about the most effective treatment for a coma, and Meghan unwittingly reveals Elliott and Dan's secret life as sex workers.

0:00 - 0:37 - Introduction and theme

Channel 101 Winner

9 AM Meeting, the video short I did with friend and fellow Mr. Whitepants-member Matt Koff, was the #1 vote-getter at this month's Channel 101. You can now see it on their website.

Thanks to all who voted, and come out to see episode two, which will be part of a special Channel 101 screening at the New York Television Festival.

9 AM Meeting at Channel 101

Hey, why not come out and see my web-series 9 AM Meeting--you know, the one you can already see for free on the Internet--at the live Channel 101 NY screening this Wednesday?

For those not already in the know, what is Channel 101? According to their website:

Every month, five-minute TV shows are screened for a live audience in New York City. The audience votes to renew some shows and cancel others.

The top five shows become the new "prime time" lineup; losing shows are banished forever.

The next month, prime time shows return with new episodes, pitted against each other and a crop of fresh new pilots.

At Channel 101, your entertainment destiny is in your hands. If you like a show, nurture it with your votes and it will bloom into a series. If you don't like a show, it goes away. Wouldn't it be great if "real" television worked this way?

So drop by and vote for my show. If nothing else, it'll expedite production of new episodes since, if our ratings demand it, I'll have to keep cranking these things out.

The Flop House Episode Forty is ONLINE

We come not to bury Jason Voorhees, but to praise him... or as much as you can praise anyone whose only purpose in life is to machete teens. Meanwhile Dan criticizes one of the victims' masturbation technique; Elliott gets schooled, Woody Harrelson-style; and Stuart reveals a fondness for womens' breasts that he has somehow managed to keep completely under wraps until now.

0:00 - 0:35 - Introduction and theme
0:36 - 39:20 - We apparently have more to say about Friday the 13th than any movie we've watched previously.
39:21 - 43:40- The most shocking final judgments yet.
43:41 - 51:24 - Listener mail
51:25 - 56:06 - In lieu of film recommendation, a slew of plugs, for a zine, Elliott's film series, and Dan's sketch group.
56:07 - 56:42 - Goodbyes, theme and outtakes.
