The Return of Gchat Theater

What do comedy writers do with their day? They spend most if it irritating each other with deliberately bad jokes. To wit:

Matt: I hear it's restaurant week.

me: I hear it's BREASTaurant week.
Hubba hubba!

Matt: You don't hear that.
You just wanted to type "breast."

me: BREASTaurant
Soooo... what's in the news.
Everyone's going crazy for this new Apple iPad!

Matt: why
why are you doing this

me: I say that pad's not going to absorb any menstrual blood.
Not worth it.

Matt: where's my whiskey...

me: Obama's doing a spending freeze.
Have a heart Mr. President.

Matt: can't... take... much... more

me: It's January!
Send your money to Miami!

Matt: the voices
the voices won't leave

me: Seriously though, you've been a terrible audience.
Just awful.
I'm gonna take a break and go to the bar, but I'll be back in 15.

Matt: the blood
the pain
the horror

Be glad I don't have your gmail address.

Hey, I'm the Featured Writer's Profile at Whim Quarterly

Whim Quarterly--the world's quarterliest humor magazine--asked all contributors to fill out a survey adapted from the gripping, must-read social work book of 1917, Social Diagnosis by Mary Ellen Richmond, and as of right now, I am the featured writer. Read my snappy answers to outdated questions over on the Whim website.

The Flop House Episode Fifty-Three is ONLINE

Is this the only time three grown men watched Hannah Montana: The Movie and it wasn't creepy? (Answer: with Stuart involved, it's always a little bit creepy.) We spend more time discussing it than the writers spent writing it. Meanwhile, Dan questions the whole premise of teen-by-day/ pop-starlet-by-night, Stuart redefines topical humor, and Elliott re-imagines the movie as a taut psychological thriller.

0:00 - 0:34 - Introductions and Theme
0:35 - 3:00 - We welcome Elliott back and, for some reason, Stuart wastes time quizzing him and Dan about current events.
3:01 - 37:24 - We discuss Hannah Montana: The Movie, because surely the audience for that picture was white males in their late twenties to early.
37:25 - 40:27 - Final Judgments (Elliott, Stu, and Dan agree - bad, but inoffensive)
40:28 - 53:49- Our longest letters segment yet, resulting in one of our patented vague Flop House contests.
53:50 - 56:49 - A very short sad bastards recommend.
56:50 - 58:14 - Goodbyes, theme, and outtakes.

The Flop House Episode Fifty-Two is ONLINE

If this is Dragonball: Evolution, we'd hate to see Dragonball: Neanderthal (this joke contributed by Milton Berle's secret joke file). Meanwhile, Dan tries to fill Elliott's tiny shoes, Stuart discusses the career of Ernie Hudson, and Nigel sounds 10% smarter than either of them.

0:00 - 0:36 - Introductions and Theme
0:37 - 3:47 - We introduce our guest co-host, Nigel Wood.
3:48 - 29:50 - We discuss 90 minutes of bright colors, loud noises, and disconnected action, in a DVD mislabeled "Dragonball: Evolution."
29:51 - 33:23 - Final Judgments Stu - bad-bad, Nigel bad-bad, Dan - actually kind of enjoyed it
33:24 - 34:30 - Station identification

Whim Quarterly Has LAUNCHED

Whim Quarterly had its launch last night at the Three of Cups Lounge on the Lower East Side, with a night of great stand-ups, free(ish) magazine copies, and discount drinks.

To go along with its official launch, the Whim Quarterly website is now up and running with more than just magazine ordering information (although that's still the most important part - ordering a copy is the only way you'll get to read the two pieces written by me, along with all the other fantastic content*). Why don't you go check out the website. We'll wait right here.

*Why not give some for Christmas? Or Hanukkah? Or The Feast of Cthulu?

9 AM Meeting Wins at the Channys

My webseries 9 AM Meeting won two of the four categories in which it was nominated, at Thursday's NYC Channy Awards. I picked up a statue for Best Animation or Special Effects and my collaborator Matt Koff and I got the award for Best Writing. It was a fantastic show, and many thanks to everyone who organized and put it together.

The Writer's Guild of America East put out a press release about our win here.

And you can read a summary of the show and get a list of all the winners on The Apiary.

Here are some photos of the event:

Lastly, there were several original videos shot specifically for the awards show, and I appeared in a couple. Check out the Craft Services video, written by Matt, and the Alibis video featuring all the nominees. ALL of the original Channy videos can be found here

The Flop House Episode Fifty-One is ONLINE!

To borrow a line from Patton Oswalt: You like Wolverine? Well, in my movie you get to see Wolverine as a little kid! Meanwhile, Stuart suggests an alternate Wolverine history of the United States, Elliott suggests some novel super-villains, Dan makes Elliott do a spit take, and contest winner Dash has the decency to be a really nice guy and not a serial killer we were foolish enough to let into the apartment.

0:00 - 0:32 - Introductions and Theme
0:33 - 1:37 - We introduce our special guest, Flop House contest winner Dash.
1:38 - 43:35 - As four comic book nerds, we find far too much to say about X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
43:46 - 45:55 - Final Judgments
45:56 - 51:55 - The sad bastards recommend.
51:56 - 54:19 - Goodbyes, theme, and outtakes.

The Flop House Episode FIFTY is ONLINE!

When a podcast reaches a certain age--say 50--it may find itself susceptible to a midlife crisis. It might buy itself a shiny red convertible mixing board. It may dump one of its hosts for a hot young blonde. Or maybe it just regresses, with an animated kid's film like Delgo. Meanwhile, Elliott tries out some of his Jabberjaw molestation jokes, Dan reveals the surprising owners of the Delgo website, and Stuart is having none of it.

0:00 - 0:34 - Introduction and theme
0:35 - 3:40 - We devote a little time to patting ourselves on the back for reaching fifty episodes.
3:41 - 28:51 - We celebrate our fiftieth anniversary by discussing Delgo, the movie most likely to inspire blank stares in our audience, followed by the phrase "What the fuck's a Delgo?." Maybe we'll get our shit together for the 100th.
28:51 - 29:58 - Pause for station identification
29:59 - 35:55 - Final judgments
35:56 - 40:40 - Flop House Movie Mailbag, plus some discussion of a wacky cross-country adventure.
40:41 - 47:40 - The sad bastards recommend.
47:41 - 49:19 - Goodbyes, theme and outtakes.

The Flop House Episode Forty-Nine is ONLINE

Does the failure of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li mean we'll never get that long-awaited Blanka biopic? We fail to answer these and other questions. Meanwhile, Stuart discusses how thugs benefit from Outlook and multi-tasking, Elliott explains how this movie would be right at home in classic Hollywood, and Dan reveals he knows far too much about lesbian vampires.

0:00 - 0:37 - Introduction and theme
0:38 - 39:10- We dive right in and discuss a movie based on Chun-Li - a video game character that was only popular because preteen boys are too scared to talk to real girls.
39:11 - 40:10 - Final judgments
40:11 - 41:33 - A CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED, for the contest everyone (even the hosts) forgot was happening.
41:34 - 47:47 - The sad bastards recommend.
47:48 - 50:17 - Plugs, goodbyes, theme and outtakes.
